MIRAMAR, FL – City commissioners for the city of Miramar, Fla., have approved spending the balance of the $80,000 for new tires on police cars and other city vehicles, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. The city had already spent $35,000 with Hialeah-based Miami Tiresoles Inc., according to city records. To spend the $45,000 balance, the commissioners' approval was needed because the city requires an approval to buy items that total more than $50,000 per vendor, said Brig M. Garg, the city's director of public works and utilities. Kirk F. Hobson-Garcia, assistant director of public works, said about 400 cars from various departments, including fire, police, public works/utilities, and social services will receive some of the new tires. Miami Tiresoles is authorized to deliver Goodyear brand auto, light truck and other tires via a state contract, according to a letter from Steven D. Williams, commercial distribution account manager for Goodyear's Florida district. Miramar is piggybacking on the contract, and because of that the city does not have to undergo the competitive bidding process for this purchase, according to city records.
