CHICAGO – After paying more than $11 million in traffic accident settlements last year, Chicago officials are slapping "How's my driving?" decals on city vehicles, according to a report in the Chicago Tribune.
The sticker asks motorists to call 311 to report any city vehicle violating traffic laws or doubling as a roadside nap stand. Fleet management crews are adding the stickers to city trucks, vans, and cars as they come in for routine maintenance. In all, the decals will be added to 6,200 vehicles.
The city's decal effort is similar to an Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) move last year to catch workers slacking or sleeping in state vehicles. A sticker with a toll-free number for people to call is pasted on the agency's vehicles. IDOT Secretary Tim Martin started the program after he personally caught two truckloads of workers napping and reading newspapers on the side of the road. The stickers will not be added to police, fire, or Office of Emergency Management vehicles, or leased cars.
