ALBUQUERQUE, NM – Bernalillo County management do not keep track of how many times each of the county’s 1,200 vehicles gets run through a carwash every year, according to the Albuquerque Tribune. However, Deputy County Manager Tim West said the County will build a nearly $500,000 county carwash.

“Eventually it’s going to pay for itself,” said West, as quoted by the Albuquerque Tribune. “We ought to be able to wash a car for $2 or less.”

The County Commission signed off on the $484,000 facility, which will be built at the county’s maintenance yard. County Manager Thaddeus Lucero estimates that the government spends about $50,000 per year at commercial carwashes around town. This new facility would cost about the same amount to operate but would allow the county to wash vehicles more often and more efficiently. The project will take four months to complete.

The city has its own special washing facilities for big vehicles and pieces of heavy equipment, but uses commercial carwashes for the rest of its fleet.
