Allen County Sheriff's Sporty Fleet Gets Larger
FORT WAYNE, IN – The Allen County Sheriff’s Department will continue testing a new type of police car by adding a few more Dodge Chargers to its fleet.
FORT WAYNE, IN– The Allen County Sheriff’s Department will continue testing a new type of police car by adding a few more Dodge Chargers to its fleet, according to the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette. The department bought three of the sporty sedans in August so that different officers could drive them in different conditions.
While the county had planned to order at least 12 Chargers this year to replace aging Ford Crown Victorias or Chevrolet Impalas that officers drive, after five months of test driving, the fuel economy isn’t what was expected. So, the county’s vehicle repair staff suggested adding a few more to the test pool and giving the cars one year on the road to better gauge long-term wear and maintenance needs.
Three Chargers, nine Crown Victorias, and two Chevrolet minivans for long-distance prisoner transport will cost about $315,000.
