Five years after the Davis (Calif.) Police Department’s unsuccessful request to add a military surplus vehicle to its fleet, the PD has been approved to purchase an armored rescue vehicle, ABC10 reported. In the past five years, the PD has experienced more “intense” situations when an armored vehicle would have been helpful, the news source reported.

Unlike a military surplus vehicle, the armored rescue vehicle looks like a delivery van but has dual rear tires meant to carry armored plating, extra weight, and benches. Additionally, there are no gun ports or turrets.

The vehicle is expected to be used for rescue and extraction, personnel and equipment transport into an inner perimeter of a tactical incident, providing cover, and tactical medic response, according to city documents. The vehicle is expected to cost $138,000, plus tax.
