BROWNSBURG, IN – A member of the Brownsburg (Ind.) Town Council wants emergency personnel to develop a better procedure to warn drivers that they are approaching an incident where extra caution is needed, according to The Indianapolis Star newspaper. This is in response to a firetruck that was hit while the fire crew assisted a leaking semi-tanker on the shoulder of the interstate. The Indianapolis Star reported that police were already present with their lights flashing when the fire engine pulled in front and perpendicular to the semi, leaving the back of the truck in the slow lane of traffic. A semi-trailer truck was unable to react in time and hit the back of the firetruck. The driver of the semi, who said it was not possible for him to change lanes because of another car in the way, received two citations for driver negligence. Although the police chief doesn´t think police or fire officials could have done anything differently to prevent the accident, council member Robert Waggoner wants the town to examine if other procedures are necessary, such as moving traffic over more than a quarter of a mile in advance.
