The Michigan State Police tested a battery-electric motorcycle and four carryover models as part of its annual tests of motorcycles available to law enforcement for the 2016 model year.
The agency's Precision Driving Unit began testing the Zero DSP ZF 12.5 with an anti-lock braking system along with the BMW R1200 RT-P, Can-AM Spyder F3, Harley-Davidson FLHTP (Electra Glide), and Harley-Davidson FLHP (Road King).
The unit tested the vehicles for top speed, dynamic handling, and braking. The unit also tested 15 cars and SUVs in late September.
The BMW R1200 captured the top speed at 137 mph, and the Zero DSP recorded a top speed of 95 mph. The BMW also captured the fastest time from 0-60 mph at 4.42 seconds. The Zero reached 0-60 mph in 6.89 seconds.
In brake testing, the Can-AM Spyder needed 122.6 feet to stop from 60 mph for the best result. The Zero needed 139.7 feet, which placed in the middle of the pack.
Troopers also evaluate the bikes with vehicle dynamics testing, where times from five laps on a road course are averaged. This year, the R1200 had the fastest time at 1 minute, 39 seconds (1:39.14).
