MIDWEST CITY, OK - The City of Midwest City Fleet Services Department and its Surplus Property Division implemented a cell phone/PDA policy in late November.

As of Nov. 23, 2009, employees of these departments are "not permitted to use a cell phone, either hand-held or hands-free" or engage in any text messaging activity "while operating a motor vehicle on company business and/or on company time," the policy states.

While driving, employees are instructed to let all calls go to voicemail.

In the event of an emergency, an employee may call 911 once the vehicle is parked in a safe location.

Any employees who violate the policy will be "subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination."
