HARRISBURG, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) awarded more than $1 million in Alternative Fuel Incentive Grants (AFIG), according to the Green Car Congress.

The program reimburses up to 20 percent of the applicant's eligible costs of an alt-fuel project. Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell signed into law Act 178 of 2004 that eliminated restrictions on the percentage of grant funds that can support alt-fuel projects. The law allows DEP to fund programs at higher percentages.

The law also allows DEP to offer a rebate instead of a grant to Commonwealth residents who buy hybrid electric and alt-fuel vehicles. Construction of alternative refueling stations and advanced technology vehicle research and development can also be funded by the grants.
