The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is reminding vehicle owners and drivers, as well as fleet managers, to check for open recalls on their vehicles. Recalls that remain unaddressed are a safety risk, according to the agency.

In 2017, manufacturers issued 813 new vehicle safety recalls that affected more than 30 million vehicles in the U.S. About 25% of the recalled vehicles have not been repaired, according to NHTSA.

Fleets can check for recalls at NHTSA's website by entering the 17-digit vehicle identification number. Fleet managers can also sign up for recall alerts so they receive an email reporting newly announced recalls of vehicles, tires, and child safety seats.

Manufacturers mail recall notices to owners, but reaching current owners remains difficult when vehicles change hands multiple times. Fleet managers who lease vehicles from fleet management companies typically receive recall information from their leasing company.
