Manatee County, Fla., has purchased five automated sandbagging machines to help residents with hurricane and storm preparation. The machines cost $12,000 each.

The new machines automate the sandbagging process, with each being able to fill approximately 700 50-lb. sandbags per hour with a team of five staff members. Together, the five machines can produce 42,500 50-lb. sandbags per 12-hour day with only 25 staff members.

“These machines will greatly reduce employee fatigue…and also reduces the amount of employees needed to operate the sand bagging sites,” said Matt Case, fleet division manager for the county. “After our busy storm season last year, we discovered we needed to find a better way to preserve our manpower and increase production for our residents.”
