The Internal Revenue Service has notified Putnam County, Tenn., officials that they must either mark take-home vehicles or begin paying taxes on them.

The county is facing an $800 fine because its vehicle policy allows certain vehicles to be left unmarked or driven home such as sheriff's cars or other emergency service vehicles.

The IRS has informed the county that it must treat the take-home cars as a taxable benefit and report it as income, reports The Herald-Citizen. Otherwise, they must include a front license plate identifying it as property and a painted marking.
