TARPON SPRINGS, FL - Seven fire rescue vehicles in Pinellas County (Fla.) are being equipped with technology that gives firefighters access to 911 dispatch information on the way to a call, according to the St. Petersburg Times newspaper. The technology cost the county about $27,000 and involves a laptop that connects to the Pinellas County emergency communications intranet to provide information about the location, driving directions, and details given by the caller. Firefighters will also have access to maps and plans for how to fight fires at major structures in the city. By inputting an address, a map appears with links to additional information, such as digital photos of the building, a floor plan, or contact information for the owners. The department had been using hand-drawn maps with details about entrances, and locations of fire hydrants and alarms for the past year. Use of the wireless technology is expected to improve response times and combat fires more effectively.
