The City of Tacoma, Wash., Police Department has bought 59 Ford Police Interceptor Utility hybrid patrol vehicles for its fleet in a first step to transitioning the entire patrol fleet to hybrids over the next seven years, KIRO reported.
The vehicles replace aging Ford Crown Victoria sedans. The PD has recently been purchasing Ford Police Interceptor Utility vehicles, easing the switch to the hybrid version, according to Paul Hanna, CAFM, fleet services manager for the city.
The hybrid vehicles cost more than their gasoline counterpart, but the city expects to get a return on investment within 16 months due to fuel savings, estimated using Ford’s fuel calculator.
The city expects to have 32 vehicles in service by the end of this month.
