LOS LUNAS, NM - Valencia County's new policy will put an end to take-home vehicles and save approximately $75,000 a year, according to KOAT.com.
County vehicles can only be taken within a 10-mile radius of their headquarters, which for most employees is the courthouse. The sheriff's department is reportedly the hardest hit by the new rule, since some employees live as far away as Albuquerque and Rio Rancho.
The sheriff told KOAT about seven deputies are affected by the new policy.
Earlier this year, the 2008-09 grand jury investigated all 10 cities in Ventura County on their practices and tax reporting regarding employee take-home vehicles, according to the Camarillo Acorn. The audit reported Ventura County had too many take-home vehicles.
