ALEXANDRIA, VA – The lower energy content of ultra-low-sulfur diesel will force truckers to buy more fuel to run the same number of miles, driving fuel expenses up, reports Transport Topics. In addition, engine manufacturers said they expect a power loss of one percent to three percent when the fuel mandated by the Environmental Protection Agency reaches diesel retail outlets later this year. Tony Greszler, vice president for advanced engineering at Volvo Powertrain, which makes engines for Mack and Volvo trucks, was quoted in Transport Topics as saying, in the laboratory, “we’re seeing a power loss of three percent, because the process of stripping sulfur out of the fuel results in less density in the fuel.” These losses will result in higher costs for trucking companies and independents, costs they can’t easily recoup through surcharges, trucking executives, and engine manufacturers.
