The Waco, Texas, City Council unanimously approved the purchase of 34 Ford Police Interceptor Utility Hybrid Vehicles at its July 19 meeting. The vote, initially set for earlier this month, had been postponed after one of the potential vehicle dealers informed the city that its initial quote of $2 million for the order was no longer valid, Government Fleet previously reported.
The city decided to to order the Ford hybrid vehicles after citing issues with a Ford Mustang Mach-E it purchased in April. The city manager told the Waco Tribune-Herald that officers were not able to power the lights, computer, or other equipment the vehicle was outfitted with. That vehicle is now being used for the department of developmental services, and the police department is searching for a new candidate for an electric police vehicle.
Waco Police began purchasing hybrid vehicles for its fleet two years ago.
The city recently reviewed a study on fleet vehicle replacement that summarizes a plan to replace city vehicles as they age. One plan recommends weighing whether to replace every aging internal combustion engine vehicle with an electric vehicle over time, according to the Waco Tribune-Herald.
