The Red Bank (Tenn.) Police Department is currently waiting to see what steps will be required in order for a third of their fleet of Volkswagen Passat TDI cars to pass emissions testing.

Police Chieft Tim Christol told WRCB that his department made a major investment when it purchased seven Passat TDIs, and that it could not afford to take them off the road immediately. The vehicles have come under fire after West Virginia researchers discovered Volkswagen used cheat software to defeat emissions testing.

The police department has not been in contact with Volkswagen directly but is still waiting to learn what they’ll be able to do to in order to ensure the vehicles stay on the road.
