The Knoxville (Tenn.) Police Department has arrested a 19-year-old man after receiving complaints that he was impersonating a law enforcement officer. Daniel Bell was driving a white 2010 Ford Crown Victoria — a decommissioned police car — that had a prisoner transport cage in the rear of the vehicle, according to the KPD.
At the time of the arrest, Bell was in possession of a black shirt with “POLICE” on the front and back, a gold badge, and a police-like radio with a microphone. Officers later recovered a window-mounted red and blue LED light from Bell's residence.
Police found that there had been multiple complaints of a suspect impersonating a law enforcement officer. Officers believe the vehicle was obtained around the first of August.
A Facebook post about the arrest had more than 300 comments, with many asking why the police car hadn’t been stripped down before being sold.
In another Facebook post about spotting potential police impersonators, the KPD defended its unmarked vehicle program.
“We utilize a very small number of unmarked vehicles in our fleet that are used in patrol activities. The vehicles we do use have a multitude of permanently affixed emergency lights and the officer will be clearly identifiable as a KPD officer,” KPD wrote.
