COLUMBIA, SC - More than 80 charging stations are being deployed in South Carolina cities: Columbia, Spartanburg, Greenville, Rock Hill, Union, Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach, Blythewood, and Charleston. Plug In Carolina, a non-profit organization that promotes the use of plug-in vehicles, secured $480,000 of funding in 2010 to deploy a statewide infrastructure for plug-in vehicles. The network opened on Dec. 8, where the company and stakholders officially plugged in the network's first car, according to Plug In Carolina.
The Town of Blythewood was the first to unveil its station on Dec. 8, according to WISTV. Although there are currently no electric cars on the road, the belief is that if the infrastructure is there, vehicles will come. Thirty fueling stations are opening this week.
