S.C. City Collects Cooking Oil to Power Fleet
Since launching in 2009, the City of Columbia, S.C.'s cooking oil recycling program has collected an average of 1,000 gallons of used oil per year, which is converted to biodiesel and used to power the city fleet.

As people around the country clean up after the Thanksgiving holiday, the City of Columbia, S.C. is inviting its community to donate its leftover cooking oil, which will be used to power the city fleet.
Donations are collected through the city’s Southern Fried Fuel program. Since launching in 2009, the program has collected an average of 1,000 gallons of used cooking oil per year. The oil is processed by Midland Biofuels in nearby Winnsboro, turned into biodiesel, and used in many of the city’s vehicles, including its fleet of refuse trucks.
