SAN ANTONIO - Pressure Systems International, which produces the Meritor Tire Inflation System (MTIS), celebrates five years as a SmartWay Transport Partnership shipper and as a manufacturer of a SmartWay endorsed technology. Automatic tire inflation systems, including MTIS, are recognized by SmartWay as a technology that saves fuel or uses fuel more efficiently and can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and other air pollution.

Automatic tire inflation systems monitor and continually adjust the level of pressurized air to tires, maintaining proper tire pressure even when the truck is moving. This technology can extend tire life by 8 percent. Installing an automatic tire inflation system on the truck drive and trailer axles can save over $200 a year in tire replacement costs and tire pressure inspection time. Automatic tire inflation systems can reduce fuel consumption by over 100 gallons a year for a typical combination truck, resulting in lower annual fuel costs and the elimination of over one metric ton of greenhouse gas emissions.

SmartWay has a cost calculator on their Web site at www.epa.gov/smartway/transport/calculators/index.htm that can be used by vehicle operators to compare costs with various SmartWay endorsed technologies including automatic tire inflation systems, using different values for fuel use, fuel costs and other critical factors.  Low-interest loans are available to fleets and owner operators that use SmartWay approved products. MTIS by PSI qualified in 2007.

The founders of Pressure Systems International were the first to recognize the benefits of automatic tire inflation for commercial vehicles developing the first system for semi-trailers in 1993.  Fifteen years later, the Meritor Tire Inflation System (MTIS) by PSI is the most widely used automatic tire inflation system in the world.  Tim Musgrave, President and CEO of PSI commented "We've used the fifteen years since we introduced our first product to learn everything we can about what makes a tire inflation system perform the best for fleet owners; and the number of fleets that have chosen MTIS for their vehicles proves to us that we have taken good advantage of those years of experience." MTIS product features and specifications, fleet testimonials and an ROI calculator are available at www.psi-atis.com

PSI provides automatic tire inflation systems and markets and sells its product through ArvinMeritor as the Meritor Tire Inflation System by PSI.  For more information about Pressure Systems International, visit www.psi-atis.com.
