T. Boone Pickens is urging the State of Oklahoma to distribute its portion of the Volkswagen emissions settlement funds to private sector fleets for natural gas vehicles instead of using it entirely on the state fleet.
In an editorial in NewsOK, he stated that distributing the majority of the state’s share of the settlement — $19 million — to the public and private sectors to incentivize them to purchase natural gas vehicles will magnify the positive effects of reducing NOx emissions.
The State of Oklahoma already has compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles in its fleet, adding 160 CNG vehicles worth $5 million in 2012.
Pickens founded the company that became Clean Energy, a natural gas provider for the transportation industry.
