NYC to Install GPS Technology in Ambulances and Fire Trucks
NEW YORK – New York City ambulances and fire trucks, 1,565 in total, are being equipped with global positioning satellite technology that will allow emergency dispatchers to track their movements in real time.
NEW YORK – New York City ambulances and fire trucks, 1,565 in total, are being equipped with global positioning satellite technology that will allow emergency dispatchers to track their movements in real time, according to Newsday. By the end of summer, emergency vehicles will be fitted with automatic vehicle location systems. The cost of installing the new technology is estimated at $50 million. Some fire and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) units have been testing the technology since Sept. 2005 through a pilot program. The new system has reduced the average EMS response time to serious medical emergencies from about 7 minutes to about 6 1/2 minutes, the report said.
