NYC Ambulances Feature Idle Reduction Technology
Auxiliary power units on the Fire Department of New York's new ambulances allow the vehicles to fully operate without leaving the engine running.
The latest batch of ambulances to hit the streets of New York City are equipped with auxiliary power units to reduce idling.

The Fire Department of New York (FDNY) added 76 new ambulances with technology to reducing idling and greenhouse gas emissions. The custom-built vehicles were supplied by Wheeled Coach, a subsidiary of REV Group.
An auxiliary power unit is installed in each ambulance, which enables the vehicle to fully operate when parked without the need to run the engine in idle mode. This reduction in idling should lead to measurable maintenance and fuel cost savings, and a quality-of-air benefit for EMS professionals and patients.
The vehicles are equipped with four-wheel-drive capability to operate in tough weather conditions.
Since 2009, Wheeled Coach has supplied more than 600 ambulances for FDNY.
