The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is adding electric vehicles (EVs) to its fleet as part of an effort to meet greenhouse gas reduction goals. The Port Authority set interim greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets that call for a 35% reduction by 2025 and reaffirmed its commitment to an 80% reduction by 2050.

The Port Authority’s steps to achieve this goal include converting its entire shuttle bus fleet of 36 to all-electric buses at three major airports and converting 50% of its light-duty fleet to run on electricity.

It will also pilot electric cargo equipment, convert airside equipment to electric at the airports, and create a new EV fast-charging hub at John F. Kennedy International Airport with 10 charging stations.

The Port Authority has also joined the We Are Still In coalition, a national alliance formed to help uphold the Paris Climate Agreement targets. It is using the baseline year of 2006 for measurement of emission reduction standards and targets.
