The Jackson, Miss., Police Department has taken delivery of 12 police vehicles that will allow it to keep as many vehicles on the streets as possible and allow more officers to have their own vehicle during the coronavirus pandemic.

The department added six traffic vehicles and six patrol vehicles to the fleet, and more are on the way, the PD announced on Facebook.

“Crime does not stop. It still happens, and we want to get as many patrol cars on the streets as we can. A lot of our patrol cars get into accidents, and some of the officers are riding two to a car. They have masks, but it’s good to have one to a car,” the PD stated.

To promote social distancing, one of these vehicles will be used to transport individuals to and from the holding facility or court.

The Jackson fleet consists of about 350 vehicles, and these new cars were purchased using grant money.
