This winter's storms pushed the cost of snow removal in New Hampshire to $9.2 million, a tab incurred by the Department of Transportation that led to a raid on the fund that pays for road and bridge repair and maintenance.

New Hampshire's DOT spent $48.3 million to clear roads. It had budgeted $39.1 million. The higher cost was due to a surprisingly heavy storm the day before Thanksgiving and a Jan. 27 blizzard that deposited more than 30 inches of snow in some parts of the state, reports the Associated Press.

"It was a very challenging winter for NHDOT personnel and equipment that began before Thanksgiving and continued with events last week," said Bill Boynton, spokesman for the department.
