The Asheville (N.C.) Police Department has taken steps to expand its take-home vehicle policy in early 2015, reports the Citizen-Times.

The agency hopes to include more patrol officers in the program, which now provides take-home vehicles to supervisors, detectives, community resource officers, and forensic service technicians. Specialized units such as the bomb squad, crisis negotiators, and the emergency response team also take their vehicles home.

Of the agency's 195 vehicles, 123 now fall under the take-home program. Last year, the agency spent $600,000 on fuel and $460,000 on maintenance for its entire fleet.
