The Michigan State Police has released the results of its MY-2022 motorcycle tests, which were completed in September. This year, the MSP tested four vehicles: BMW R 1250 RT-P, Harley-Davidson FLHTP, Harley-Davidson FLHP, and Yamaha FJR1300P-AB.

During dynamics testing, the BMW R 1250 RT-P had the fastest average lap, at 1:37:46. The second fastest was the Yamaha FJR1300P-AB, which averaged 1:38:32.

For acceleration, the BMW also had the fastest 0-60 mph time of 4.17 seconds, followed by the Yamaha at 4.45 seconds. However, the Yamaha came in slightly faster from 0-100 mph, at 9.25 seconds compared to the BMW’s 9.29 seconds. The Yamaha also had the highest practical top speed, at 145 mph, followed by the BMW, with 134 mph.

The BMW beat out other models in the brake test, with a projected stopping distance from 60 mph of 138.3 feet. This was followed by the Harley-Davidson FLHP, with 141.4 feet. MSP noted that brake testing was done at a different facility this year, and this may have contributed to the increase in braking distance when compared to the 2021-MY motorcycles.

The MSP has been testing police vehicles annually since the 1950s and motorcycles since 2004. It recommends that public agencies apply the information to the needs of their departments.

The results of vehicle tests can be viewed here.
