HELENA, MT - State officials say they will implement a $65,000 software system to track state vehicles after a recent audit failed to determine how many vehicles the state owns, reported the Great Falls Tribune.
Janet Kelly, head of the state Department of Administration, said the software should make accounting for the state's fleet easier and more accurate.
A legislative audit carried out recently determined the state owns between 4,800 to 7,000 vehicles. Currently, each state agency is responsible for buying and maintaining its own vehicles.
Agencies can also lease vehicles from the Department of Transportation Motor Pool.
The audit found that most agencies couldn't provide specific information about vehicle usage, including miles driven and maintenance costs, reported the Tribune.
