Vehicles belonging to the two largest law enforcement divisions within the Iowa Department of Public Safety do not have enough secure storage solutions for weapons, according to the Iowa Center of Public Affairs Journalism.

Since 2017, the Iowa State Patrol and Division of Criminal Investigation have equipped new vehicles with locking devices to secure firearms beyond a vehicle’s door or truck.

The investigation found that, as recently as May, more than half of these vehicles were not equipped with locking rifle racks or handgun vaults, and in 2018 an officer’s loaded pistol was burglarized from a locked fleet vehicle. Current policies do not dictate how a handgun should be stored in an unattended vehicle when there is no locking mechanism.
