The City of Hobart, Ind., opened a time-fill compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling station and showcased its new CNG-compliant maintenance garage at its Public Works facility.

In order to accommodate the addition of CNG vehicles, the city needed more space and an up-to-date facility. In 2017, the Chicago Tribune reported that construction of the garage and fueling station was financed for $1.45 million. At the time, it was reported that the new facility would be more than double the size of the current garage, and would include additional bays and a more adequate heating system.

The fueling station includes 13 CNG pumps, with room for expansion. The new maintenance garage uses a sensor that will automatically open garage doors and recycle the air in the garage if it detects natural gas in the air, NWI Times reported.

CNG is not a new fuel for the City of Hobart. The city purchased its first CNG-powered truck in 2013, and is now up to three CNG vehicles. With the unveiling of its new fueling station, the city plans to purchase more CNG vehicles and retrofit two existing diesel trucks with CNG engines, NWI Times reported.
