The John R. Elliott HERO Campaign has unveiled three new members of its fleet of HERO patrol vehicles aimed at preventing drinking and driving. The cars, including a former military Humvee, display the HERO Campaign logo and messages promoting designated driving, and will serve as rolling billboards in New Jersey's Longport, Pleasantville, and Vineland.
The HERO vehicles are part of the campaign’s “Summer of HEROES” initiative to remind motorists to always have a safe ride home whenever they consume alcoholic beverages.
Current HERO cruisers from seven other South Jersey Police Departments also participated in the ceremony, bringing to ten the number of vehicles partnering with the HERO Campaign and its mission to end drunk driving.
The cars will be used for regular traffic patrols and special events.
The HERO Campaign was established in memory of Navy Ensign John R. Elliott who was killed by a drunken driver in July 2000. The organization encourages people to take the John R. Elliott HERO Pledge to either "Be a HERO. Be a Designated Driver," or to use a safe and sober designated driver when going out.
