The Tuscon (Ariz.) Police Department hopes to replace about 40 of its patrol cars this year to address an aging fleet with more than half of the vehicles showing more than 80,000 miles on the odometer.

Of the 840 vehicles, 454 have accrued more than 80,000 miles, a Tucson PD spokesman told Tucson.com. Most of the cars are eight years old and range from the model years 1988 to 2015.

The agency needs about $4 million to replace older vehicles and in-car computers, according to an estimate from the finance manager. Replacing 40 cars would cost $1.8 million.
