GREENVILLE, SC -Greenville County has been awarded a federal grant to retrofit 100 patrol cruisers to run on propane fuel, according to WYFF News 4. The vehicles will be capable of burning gasoline and propane.
The grant money, part of nearly $300 million recently awarded to 25 "green" projects by the Department of Energy, also covers the construction of three propane refueling stations strategically placed throughout the county so that the deputies can fill up.
The county is working with Alliance Auto Gas to convert the fleet vehicles to propane hybrids, which is expected to help reduce the fleet's emissions by almost 30 percent.
Greenville County will start retrofitting its fleet in the next two months. There is already talk of expanding the program after the initial vehicle conversions are complete, reported WYFF.
As public agencies work to cut emissions from off-road operations, fleets are turning to a mix of renewable fuels, hybrid systems, battery-electric equipment and emerging hydrogen technology.
