Element Pay Introduces Cardless Fuel Payments with Spending Controls
Fuel purchasing can be difficult to monitor across departments, vehicles, and drivers. Element Fleet Management's new payment system aims to give public fleet managers greater visibility into transactions while helping prevent unauthorized spending before it occurs.

Element reports that drivers choose higher-priced fueling stations about 20% of the time, highlighting an opportunity for fleet managers to reduce fuel spending through purchasing restrictions.
Government Fleet
Element Fleet Management has introduced Element Pay, a cardless fuel payment system designed to help fleets manage fuel spending, prevent unauthorized purchases, and reduce administrative work.
The new platform is offered via Element Mobility and connects fuel purchases to specific vehicles. This allows fleet managers to control spending before transactions are authorized.
Managing Fuel Purchases Across Departments
Element Pay uses vehicle verification to authorize fuel purchases rather than relying exclusively on physical fuel cards. Drivers initiate purchases through the Element Pay app, with direct-pay transactions requiring verification of the associated vehicle before authorization.
Fleet managers can establish purchasing rules that determine where drivers can fuel, how much they can spend, and which transactions are permitted.
It also allows managers to restrict purchases at higher-priced fueling locations. Element said drivers select more expensive stations approximately 20% of the time, creating opportunities to reduce costs through purchasing controls.
Transactions can also be linked to specific vehicles.
Reducing Administrative Work and Payment Issues
Element Pay supports both direct pay and tap to pay.
Direct pay uses vehicle verification to authorize purchases, while tap to pay provides an alternative. It also includes real-time transaction visibility, digital receipts, and automated reconciliation.
The software also lets drivers onboard digitally without waiting for physical fuel cards. Connected vehicle data can provide additional verification, though telematics isn't required to use the platform.
Element Pay currently supports more than 85,000 fueling locations across the United States. They plan to expand their vehicle-based payment capabilities to additional fleet expenses, including maintenance, tolls, violations, and EV charging. The company has not announced a timeline for those additions.
