General Motors and a U.S. Army research unit will show a Chevrolet Colorado mid-size pickup that's powered by a hydrogen fuel cell system in October in Washington, D.C., the automaker announced.
GM has been collaborating with the U.S. Army's Tank Automotive Research, Development, and Engineering Center (TARDEC) on a fuel-cell Colorado that could withstand the extremes of daily military use since November. The Army research unit has been testing the vehicle under a contract with the automaker.
The vehicle will be shown at the fall meeting of the Association of the U.S. Army.
The Army will use the vehicle "to demonstrate the capabilities fuel cell electric propulsion and power generation systems can bring to the military, including quieter mobility, exportable power generation, low-end torque and water generation," according to GM. The Army intends to conduct user assessments and demonstrations in 2017.
