General Motors has begun offering an off-road package for its Chevrolet Silverado special service truck for first responders.
Government fleets can add an optional suspension or tire package to the crew cab Silverado 1500 that's been configured for law enforcement duty cycles with a 5.3L EcoTec3 V-8 engine and an upgraded electrical system.
The Suspension Package (9G3) includes Z71 suspension components, recovery hooks, high-capacity air cleaner, and transfer case shield on the four-wheel-drive model. The package doesn't include any Z71 appearance features or Hill Descent Control.
The suspension package requires the heavy-duty locking differential (G80) and one of three tire options, including the off-road R18 tire package. Fleets could also add the all-terrain RC3 tires sized at P265/70R17 or all-terrain RC5 tires sized at LT265/70R17C.
The tire package (R18) adds Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac tires sized at 265/65R18SL MT 114S. The more aggressive tread may cause higher wind noise while driving. Routine tire rotations are recommended to minimize irregular tire wear, according to a GM spokesperson.
