Douglas County, Ga., commissioners are set to approve a new vehicle policy that would implement vehicle allowances instead of take-home vehicles, as a cost-savings method.
The shift comes after a newspaper report revealed costly fuel expenses for take-home vehicles used by more than 25 county employees. The fuel alone for 15 directors and managers cost more than $30,000 over a year's time, the Douglas County Sentinel reported.
In response, the county developed a 22-page vehicle use policy that covers "everything from how vehicles can be used when commuting, to vehicle maintenance an replacement and how to conserve fuel," the Sentinel reports.
The county plans to give vehicle allowances ranging from $185 to $370 rather than issuing county cars and paying for gas and upkeep.
As public agencies work to cut emissions from off-road operations, fleets are turning to a mix of renewable fuels, hybrid systems, battery-electric equipment and emerging hydrogen technology.
