PRINCETON, NJ – More than $6 million is going toward replacing heavy-duty, high-polluting diesel engines in garbage trucks, school buses, locomotives, and construction equipment in North Texas, according to Fleet Focus, an e-mail newsletter produced by the National Association of Fleet Administrators (NAFA). According to NAFA, public and private-sector organizations are encouraged to apply for part of $5.6 million in funding to employ clean technologies in their operations. The funds are made available through a partnership between the North Central Texas Council of Governments and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. Projects could include replacements, repowers, or retrofits of high-polluting vehicles and equipment. New vehicle/equipment lease and purchase projects also are eligible. The call for projects opened on Aug. 14, and funding is being awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis, with applications being scored and selected in one-week intervals, closing at 5 p.m. each Friday until all funds are awarded, according to Fleet Focus. All projects funded through this program must reduce NOx emissions by at least 25 percent and operate in the region at least 75 percent of the time.
