A former supervisor for Augusta County, Va., is facing 22 criminal charges after using a county fleet fuel card to purchase more than $4,000 worth of fuel for personal use between fall 2017 and October 2018. Terry Kelley Jr. resigned as Beverley Manor district supervisor in late November and was indicted at the end of December.
According to a press release from the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office, the county was alerted to apparent fraudulent use in October after a fuel card was used in Florida. The card was linked to an antique fire truck that has been in the shop for repairs for the past year. After questioning local gas stations and viewing security footage, the Sheriff’s Office was able to identify that Kelley, who also served as a volunteer firefighter, used the card.
"Augusta County is shocked and disappointed in the news that former board member Mr. Terry Lee Kelley Jr. is involved in the unauthorized use of one of the County’s fuel cards. We trust that the judicial process will ensure a complete resolution to this unfortunate situation,” said County Administrator Tim Fitzgerald in a statement.
In late December, a special grand jury indicted Kelly on one count of credit card theft, one count of credit card fraud, and 20 counts of credit card forgery.
