CHICAGO – Sidney Redwine, a watchman for the city’s Department of General Services, has pleaded guilty to stealing 300 gallons of gas for his personal car from taxpayer-owned fueling stations that are supposed to be used for city-owned vehicles, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Acting on a tip provided by the Fleet Management Department, Inspector General David Hoffman conducted an undercover investigation that showed Redwine filled up his tank 30 times between April and November of last year. The city’s 11 fueling stations pump more than 6 million gallons of gas each year.

Fleet Management Commissioner Howard Henneman said cars with private license plates are allowed to fill up at city pumps because the city rents vehicles that do not have municipal plates. The gas is supposed to be pumped by an attendant. That didn’t happen in Redwine’s case.

Redwine, was terminated and sentenced to two years of probation.
