EDISON, NJ – Edison Township’s goal to eventually have half its fleet of cars consist of hybrid electrics recently advanced as the police department rolled out four of the energy-saving vehicles, according to http://ems.gmnews.com.

According to a statement released by the township government, the cars, 2009 Honda Civic hybrids, will be used by the department’s detective bureau.

The cars, according to township communications director Jerry Barca, recently arrived and are already on the road and in use by the police department. They were provided to the township by Open Road Honda, in Edison, at a price of $23,273 each. The cars receive 40 miles per gallon of gas in city driving and 45 miles per gallon on the highway.

The four vehicles join the 26 hybrid cars that the township purchased this past summer, primarily for use by the Department of Public Works.

Edison currently maintains a fleet of 435 vehicles.
