DOUGLAS COUNTY, NE – Fleet vehicles in Douglas County may soon be equipped with global positioning system technology to track employees’ movements while at work, reported the Omaha World-Herald newspaper. The plan is being considered to save money and make the fleet more efficient, but some members of the county board are concerned that the system would be used to punish employees. The county is currently considering a system that records car movements and allows supervisors to review the information, but officials have not ruled out a system that provides supervisors with real-time, live location information, according to the World-Herald. Douglas County has 315 vehicles, including police cars and road equipment. County board members in support of the GPS tracking equipment noted that the Orkin extermination company has used GPS to manage its fleet and has saved several hundred thousand dollars.
