The Detroit Police Department launched a take-home police vehicle program on May 8, by providing a refurbished 2004 Crown Victoria to an officer who lives in the city.
The vehicle had 40,000 miles on it and was equipped with new interior equipment for free by a local company, reports the Detroit News.
Police Chief James Craig said he hopes to assign up to 20 Crown Victorias to officers by the end of the year. These vehicles are being retired due to peeling paint.
