PIKEVILLE, KY – Pikeville, Ken., commissioners have voted to install GPS units in 25 city vehicles, according to the Web site www.news-expressky.com. The new GPS system, which will be purchased from S&L Services for $14,000 a year, tracks a vehicle’s location, determine how long the vehicle spent at a location, and record the rate of speed a vehicle was traveling.
In addition, the system provides an alert when a vehicle goes over the speed limit or its mileage limit.
The units, which records every five seconds, will be installed on police cruisers, the code enforcement officer’s vehicle, and the project manager’s vehicle. Eventually, officials will discuss adding units to fire department vehicles.
