OAKLAND, CA – The city of Oakland has added two more clean-air vehicles to its fleet as part of a continuing effort to reduce pollution in the city, according to Bay City News Wire. A grant from the Bay Area Air Quality Management District allowed the city’s Public Works Agency to replace two of its diesel-powered units with clean-burning compressed natural gas vehicles. The engines of two heavy-duty vehicles, a street sweeper truck and a garbage packer truck, were retrofitted to burn compressed natural gas instead of diesel fuel. Two older diesel-powered vehicles will be dismantled and permanently removed from service, the report said. The two new vehicles will join the city’s fleet of 183 natural gas vehicles. The city is also planning a new compressed natural gas refueling station to be used for both public and private vehicle owners. The station is expected to be in operation by early 2007.
