CANTON, OHIO – The city of Canton may invest in new technology to address downtown parking issues, according to The Repository. Purchasing the system would require city council approval. The system, from AutoVu Technologies, features digital video cameras attached to the parking division’s Ford Explorer would scan license plates and tire position. The information would then be sent to a computer that would “digitally chalk” vehicles, detecting when cars and trucks are parked beyond the time limit. The system also has the ability to compare license plates to a list of chronic parking offenders — those who haven’t paid several tickets — and even identify stolen or wanted cars. If purchased, two cameras would be mounted to the roof of a city vehicle, and two cameras would be mounted to the rear bumper, according to The Repository report. Recommended driving speed is 15 mph to ensure accuracy. Video footage would be recorded of rear and front license plates and the position of valve stems on a parked vehicle to prove it was parked in a space too long. Global Positioning System satellite technology would pinpoint the location of the vehicle in the city’s parking grid. Parking patterns also could be analyzed, even at parking garages.
