CHATTANOOGA, TN - Putting more city workers in high-mileage cars is just one of the ways the City of Chattanooga is looking to save money and reduce emissions, according to the Chattanooga Times Free Press.
Brian Kiesche, the city's fleet manager, said about 60 detectives and 20 other inspectors and city administrators soon will be in diesel Jettas, hybrid Priuses, and Ford Focuses, reported the Press.
In addition, Kiesche said the city is experimenting with E-85 ethanol and biodiesel. The fleet efforts have no specific savings goal just yet, since it is early in the experiment, he said.
"The goal for the fleet is to reduce fuel usage and reduce our carbon footprint. We just have to make sure it fits our needs," Kiesche told the Press.
As public agencies work to cut emissions from off-road operations, fleets are turning to a mix of renewable fuels, hybrid systems, battery-electric equipment and emerging hydrogen technology.
